This time, we get to hear UX Designer Hanna Remula’s thoughts on her typical workweek. A typical week would usually include a larger number of mid-week meetings and client visits, but this week Hanna spent most of her time at her workstation. Let’s take a peek at what a week in the life of a UX designer looks like in the summer!

 

Varied projects and customer-oriented design


Hanna joined the Etteplan MORE team in spring of 2017, when the company was still known as Eatech. A lot has happened since then, and Hanna has worked on projects ranging from web, mobile and desktop application design to designing different digital services for consumers, industrial operators and other user groups.


UX stands for ‘user experience’, and it is the UX designer’s job to ensure that digital services are suitable for their purpose, easy to use and, naturally, accessible to those who need them. Making the services convenient or even fun to use doesn’t hurt either. “What I find motivating in my line of work is that if designed well, digital services can actually make people’s lives easier instead of simply increasing technology adoption just for the sake of it,” Hanna says.

Inspiration from genuine work community and people-oriented work


What Hanna likes most about her work as a UX designer is its people-oriented nature and the variety it provides both in terms of different projects and the methods used. A typical workweek may include, for example, designing and facilitating workshops, definition work and both user interviews and user testing. First and foremost, her job involves working together with clients, developers, designers, project managers, users and other stakeholder groups. This collaborative approach allows information collected at different project stages to be refined into concepts, wireframe models, UI layouts and prototypes.


When asked about her working environment, Hanna praises the genuine and caring atmosphere of her work community. She feels that she can relax and be herself among her colleagues, and the atmosphere of trust encourages her to find the best way to do her job.


“We trust each other’s competence, and don’t have to worry about making mistakes. Instead, we are given room to learn from them, which leads to positive outcomes,” Hanna muses.

 
Next up: Taking on more responsibilty


In UX work, it is equally important to keep the big picture under control and take care of the details. “I’ve been steering my career growth towards taking over larger wholes and expanding my responsibilities in the future,” Hanna says.


Working life is undergoing a tremendous change, and the software business continues to evolve at a rapid pace. According to Hanna, Etteplan MORE encourages its employees to continue developing their competence and rewards professional growth in various ways. “My studies have included for example a study module in both service design and design management. It’s wonderful that my employer has supported me in my studies and competence development.”
